Ah, the Joys of Interviews

One of my favorite things about working at Dittoe PR is getting the opportunity to handle the interview process with Lauren Sanders. We get to meet a lot of different people with a lot of different experiences to share. It’s really refreshing to talk with others who are as passionate about the field of public relations as our entire team here at Dittoe is. I love hearing the media relations successes of other PR professionals. One example is a recent interviewee who worked her butt off to get a really amazing Wall Street Journal story for her previous employer. Her feeling of accomplishment when seeing that story run is one that many of us can relate to.

During the interview process, we have a lot of really remarkable conversations. But, like everything in life, the good certainly comes with the bad. I thought I’d take a few moments to point out some of the dos and don’ts of interviewing.

Always over prepare. If needed, script out some of the potential questions you could be asked, and what your response would be.

Review your resume. It seems obvious, but many interviewees can’t even speak to what they’ve done at some of their past jobs. Granted, some of their jobs were from years ago, but it’s important to know what’s on your resume back and forth. After all, that’s all the interviewer has to go off of.

Be nervous. Being nervous and anxious is a normal part of walking into an interview. What isn’t normal is coming into the interview overly laid back and talking to the interviewer like you would your best friend. If you truly care about getting the job you apply for, then you’ll be nervous, and the interviewer will understand. Just don’t pit out because you’re freaking out about it!

Bring something to leave behind.  I can only speak for my interviewing experience at Dittoe PR, but we absolutely love and appreciate when interviewees bring in samples of work to leave behind. If you’re trying to join a team that specializes in media relations experience, bring some of copies of your greatest placements. Also bring in plenty of writing samples. As media outlets continue to cut back on their staffs, PR folks are required to do more writing than ever. Come to the interview with press releases, case studies, bylines, etc.

Happy job hunting!

When the thought of an internship comes to mind, most people become elated with the chance of gaining real life experience, and some people simply think of making endless copies and doing the “grunt” work. I am here to tell you, for me personally, interning at Dittoe PR has exceeded my expectations beyond any limit of my imagination. I mean, heck, they let me write blog posts for them. What more could an intern ask for?!

Of course, I do a lot of grunt work, but I am happy to do it. Dittoe PR is a well oiled machine, and my internship has allowed me to become part of that machine. Each employee depends on me to do high-quality work, and they give me quite a bit of responsibility, in which I feel privileged to engage myself. So, when the grunt work comes up, I do it with a smile, because the fact of the matter is that it needs to be done in the best interest of our clients. Period. I understand it is my duty as an intern, and it’s a small price to pay for the valuable public relations experience.

Dittoe PR is one of the top public relations agencies in Indianapolis, and with that comes amazing clients that make each day unique and fun. I never imagined I would get the opportunity to actually write pitches for reporters and secure and document media coverage for our clients. With this experience, I have learned a great deal – far more than can be gained by sitting in a classroom. If there’s one thing I have learned, it is that media relations is fast-paced, rigorous and stimulating. It takes heaps of thought and strategy – more than originally envisioned. Dittoe PR has not only shown me the world of public relations, but they have thrown me head first into the mix and let me experience it for myself.

I have four weeks left, and I already know that I will be taking with me a more advanced skill set. The work I have done has honed my writing skills, improved my time management, taught me how to multi-task efficiently and polished my research proficiency. This experience and my newly developed skill set have given me the confidence to succeed at the new challenges that await me after graduation in May.

Who knows what is in the deck for me and my career, but I do know I will have long lasting relationships with my fellow Dittoe PR colleagues. Thank you guys, for everything.

Joke’s on the Boss!

It’s only fitting that karma comes around to the biggest jokester of all. This morning we pulled a big April Fools’ Joke on bossman Chris, the one who’s always pranking us in the Dittoe PR office. Boy, did we get him good.

It had to be a believable story because if anyone can catch a prank in the making it’s Chris. And if you know me, I’m a terrible liar, and I knew it had to be realistic or I would crack. So I sent an email to Chris in the morning saying those four words that always precede bad news, “We need to talk.” He told me to come on over to his office, so I got my serious face on and prepared to tell him I was putting in my two weeks. I had a convincing story, saying that my boyfriend, Tyler, and I were moving back to Tennessee. I told him Tyler got accepted to Vanderbilt Law, and that I had been in touch with my former boss in Nashville and she offered me a new position at her publicity firm. We were going to start the process of moving in May, and I thanked Chris for the extraordinary opportunity to work for the best PR firm in Indy.

Chris totally bought it. The minute I left his office he blasted an email to Liza, Lauren and Megan with the subject line “THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE!” giving them the news I was leaving. We couldn’t even control ourselves we were laughing so hard! About 10 minutes later, feeling guilty and worrying that Chris might start gathering termination papers, we all ran into Chris’s office yelling “Happy April Fools’!” He buried his head in his hands and yelled a few non-choice words in disbelief.

And that is how you scare, and fool, the big boss on April Fool’s Day.
